STEAM had Modern Warfare 3 multiplayer available for free this weekend and I thought I would check out the newest installment of a series I hadn't played in a while. The last games in the Call of Duty series I played were Modern Warfare and World at War a few years ago. My son plays MW2 online with his friends and likes it, so I bought that this weekend ( $4.99 on Amazon) and decided to try out the MW3 free weekend with him as well. It was really fun and contradicted a lot of things that I had heard about it that had kept me away for so long. First I played MW2 with my son running some of the Spec Ops missions. Then I did one myself, the gameplay is a bit different than S.T.A.L.K.E.R. ( the only other FPS series that I play) but in the end they are actually quite similar.
Then it was on to MW3 multiplayer, which was basically the good, the bad, and the ugly. First of all, I had a lot of fun playing with my son and started to get acquainted with the maps a bit. In addition to that I got some decent clips to make this next video. One of the kill features is a "payback" kill, and money literally flies from the body of the victim, that was hilarious. This is a pictorial presentation of how it works.
1. I kill a guy with the nik iconmadness332.
2. He then respawns somewhere on the map, a pretty random location is my guess, but in this case it was pretty near my location and behind me ( lucky him). He then makes his way back to where he died and voila, he gets "payback", and the money symbolically flutters around my body.
The game even had a map reminiscent of typical S.T.A.L.K.E.R. maps called Fallen, I really liked that map but only got to play it twice, and the second match was ruined by a cheater who killed me a bunch of times using a wall hack. If that wasn't bad enough he was shooting us through cover, sometimes even through TWO walls of a building, the solid stone outer walls. Which leads us to the bad, there were a few cheaters, probably more than I actually saw because I didn't watch all the Kill Cams, so I really only saw the blatant cheaters using wall hacks. I just don't understand what they get out of playing the game, really, how is it fun if you can't die (God mode) or have an unfair competitive advantage? Those are the people out there that are obsessed with rankings and not just having fun. Also, I killed a dude with an RPG and there was another guy standing right next to him ( they could've been making out for all I know, they were that close), the other guy SURVIVED somehow and, that was pretty lame, the collateral damage from an RPG blast should be much greater. Lastly, the ugly, I couldn't help but laugh at myself because I basically just ran around like a chicken with its head cut off, in my defense though I didn't know the maps at all, but still, I n00bed it up something fierce this weekend. I hardly used the mini-map at all because in S.T.A.L.K.E.R. enemies only show up once YOU see them, in MW3 I guess that enemies show up on it if you AND your teammates see them, so enemies on the other side of the map nowhere close to me were showing up...weird, but at least now I know.
I made a video of my MW3 weekend highlights and set to In My Memory by DJ Tiesto, because the map that starts the video brought back a lot of fun S.T.A.L.K.E.R. memories and it has a fast beat which is great for gaming videos. MW3 was just so fun this weekend that I may be moving on from S.T.A.L.K.E.R. So yes, this "highlight" video won't show me dying that much, even though I most definitely did. Once I start getting to know the maps I'll be de-n00bified. After the gameplay from the Fallen map I included video clips from other maps and then near the end I included some clips of my son playing as well, his nik is Prototype and of course mine is wol-va-rine. There would definitely be endless, unmitigated nerd rage on his part if I didn't shamelessly plug his MW3 skills somehow. Also I just uploaded the video and it's still processing, the quality will be a 1080p when the processing is completed.
